Does anyone's engine sound like a diesel. On idle its the most unrefined 5 cyl ive ever heard. And now to top it off my car has the dreaded timing chain rattle at 2k revs from cold. I've videos it but with the agricultural nature of the engine it's hard to pick up on the video, but plain as day to the ear in person. Still under warranty so let's see what they say.

Car sounds amazing whatever the revs. Must be a problem with yours.

Mine sounded like a diesel also, massively worse on start up. All gudgeon pins knackered and whole engine replaced along with a million other bits at a cost of just under £20k

Out interest Leevr, 8p or 8v? And how many miles?
Good luck with it, doesn't sound like it's going to be an easy fix

8p with 23k started with a metallic scraping about 4 weeks ago. Now on start it's the noisiest clankiest rattle. With timing chain rattle at 2k. Got a video of cold engine and hot. Dramatic difference. It's under warranty with an independent M power dealership called Sutherlands here in Somerset. I'm just hoping their warranty covers what's required. Can't upload the vids as too big for this site.

Sad times indeed.....
It does make me wonder how many 2.5 5 cylinder engines are going to be affected by this issue as time goes on.......
I wonder if cars subjected to a hard life and serviced on a shoestring will be more at risk of developing this issue.

My 2 pence worth is that potentially many stick to Audi oil service schedule and that is just no good.
Because of the way this engine works the oil gets hugely contaminated with fuel and the oil is so diluted with fuel it can't do its job properly.

Maybe.....
Coupled with people inheriting a car that’s had minimal servicing and lead a hard life for its first 20k or so.

If that was the case you would have high oil consumption due to bore wash ?
The smaller TFSI engines have cam chain problems for not apparent reason at any milage.

Faulty HPFP allowing fuel to find it’s way into the oil
Faulty injector sticking open allowing fuel in and buggering up the piston.
In my opinion RS cars need regular oil changes beyond the Audi schedules.
Both mine were always changed in between then main dealer oil changes.
Does no harm to keep the oil as fresh as possible.
I’ll be doing the same with the R.

I service mine myself & use the Audi AVS schedule but i only does 8k between oil services & do mainly motorway mileage.

Quick update on my car. After the garage I got the car from having had it back for nine days stating nothing wrong with the car, they relented and took it to Audi. Turns out it needed the ecu upgrade to increase cold start oil pressure for the timing chain to stop the rattle. All sorted now and collect it tommorow. Roll on RS03 fest at castle combe next saturday.
