Ovo Cool Math Games: Expert Review by Veteran Educator | Modulo (2024)

Ovo Cool Math Games is part of the Cool Math Games platform, known for combining educational content with entertaining gameplay. This game, introduced in 2019, quickly distinguished itself with its engaging, fast-paced platformer style that challenges both reflexes and problem-solving skills. It targets not only kids looking for fun learning tools but also appeals to older players due to its challenging gameplay mechanics (Cool Math Games) (FactsCircle).

Differentiation:
What sets Ovo apart in the educational game category is its balance of simplicity in design with rigorous cognitive demands. It employs minimalistic graphics that focus the player on gameplay rather than visual distractions. The game is particularly noted for enhancing problem-solving skills, spatial awareness, and hand-eye coordination, making it an ideal educational tool for a wide age range (FactsCircle) (FamousProGamer).

How to Get Started:
To begin using Ovo Cool Math Games in a homeschooling setting, simply access it through the Cool Math Games website. It's playable on both desktop and mobile platforms, ensuring ease of access and flexibility in learning environments (Cool Math Games).

How it Works:
As a homeschooling curriculum supplement, Ovo can be integrated into daily learning routines. Each gaming session could be about 20-30 minutes, focusing on completing several levels each day. The game's design supports independent play, but parents can engage by discussing strategies or collaborating on solving more challenging levels. It's "open-and-go" with no prior setup required, making it exceptionally user-friendly (Cool Math Games) (FamousProGamer).

Educational Concepts Taught:

While Ovo Cool Math Games primarily focuses on enhancing problem-solving skills and coordination, it indirectly touches upon several mathematical concepts through its gameplay mechanics:

  • Estimation and Prediction: Players often need to estimate distances and predict the trajectory of jumps to successfully navigate levels.

  • Spatial Reasoning: Navigating the character through complex platforms requires understanding spatial relationships and planning movements accordingly.

  • Pattern Recognition: Recognizing patterns in level design can help players anticipate challenges and devise strategies.

  • Logical Thinking: Each level is a puzzle that requires logical sequencing and execution of actions to complete.

  • Probability and Risk Assessment: Deciding when and how to execute certain moves involves assessing the likelihood of success or failure based on given obstacles.

  • Timing and Precision: The game demands precise timing for jumps and slides, akin to calculating exact moments for actions, which aligns with mathematical timing calculations.

What’s Good About It:
Users love Ovo for its engaging gameplay that doesn't feel overtly educational, thus keeping children interested and motivated. The incremental difficulty of levels allows for progressive skill development, which is a key component in educational gaming. Its quick-paced nature keeps the gameplay exciting and challenging (FamousProGamer).

What Could Be Improved:
While Ovo offers many benefits, it could improve by including more direct educational content linked to specific math skills or logic operations. Additionally, some users find the difficulty spike in certain levels a bit frustrating, which could be mitigated by offering adjustable difficulty settings for less experienced players (FamousProGamer).

Other eedback from parents and players regarding areas for improvement in Ovo Cool Math Games often includes concerns about:

  • Ads and In-App Purchases: Some parents express concerns about the presence of ads, which can be distracting for children and interrupt gameplay. There are also worries about in-app purchases, which might tempt children to spend without understanding the implications.

  • Privacy Concerns: With any digital platform, there are always concerns about how user data is handled and protected. Parents would appreciate more transparent information regarding privacy policies and data usage.

  • Difficulty Adjustments: A common request is for adjustable difficulty settings to accommodate younger players or those new to gaming, which would make the game more inclusive.

  • Educational Content Integration: While the game is excellent for developing cognitive skills, some parents would like to see more direct integration of explicit mathematical concepts to enhance educational value.

Advice from Parents:
Parents recommend using Ovo as a supplement to traditional learning, particularly for children who need more dynamic activities to keep them engaged. They suggest setting clear objectives, like completing a set number of levels per week, to integrate the game more effectively into educational routines (FamousProGamer).

Who It’s an Ideal Fit For:
This game is perfect for students who enjoy dynamic, hands-on learning and those who benefit from visual and kinesthetic learning experiences. It's also ideal for learners who need to improve their problem-solving skills and those who might be motivated by gamified learning (FamousProGamer).

Who It’s Probably Not a Fit For:
Ovo may not be suitable for students who are easily frustrated by challenging tasks or those who prefer slow-paced, narrative-driven educational tools. It might also not appeal to those who require direct, traditional educational content in their learning activities (FamousProGamer).

Grades:
Suitable for grades 3-8, given the game's complexity and skill requirements.

Cost:
Free; optional in-game purchases are available.

Ways to Get It:
Ovo can be accessed for free on the Cool Math Games website, playable on both PC and mobile devices. No installation or purchase is necessary, making it highly accessible for homeschooling families looking for an engaging educational resource (Cool Math Games).

Manisha Snoyer (co-founder of Modulo)

For the last 20 years, I’ve taught over 2000 children in 3 countries (of all socio-economic backgrounds). I pioneered an English language program in a conflict region in the Middle East. I’ve worked as a bilingual public school teacher at some of the highest and lowest performing public schools and in all five boroughs of NYC. I’ve tutored 18 subjects in three languages to some of the wealthiest families in NYC, San Francisco and Paris to make up for shortcomings in private schools they were paying up to $60,000 a year to attend.

Since 2015, I’ve helped hundreds of parents start microschools (way before this was a household buzzword). I founded CottageClass, the first marketplace for microschools and learning pods that was part of the Techstars 2018 class. In 2019, I created a virtual learning program to help families through the pandemic, a free online math tutoring program (masteryhour.org), and schoolclosures.org, a hotline developed in collaboration with Twilio and 80 other partners including Khan Academy, Revolution Foods and the Crisis Text Line, that served 100,000 families impacted by school closures.

I’ve climbed trees with children in forest schools in San Francisco, and tested new digital apps with kids in seven countries.

I’ve also coached dozens of families at different stages in their homeschooling journey. Most recently, I founded Modulo with homeschooling dad, best-selling author and tech entrepreneur Eric Ries, to help families curate their children’s education, social and childcare experiences drawing from a diverse array of in-person and online resources.

During the last three years, I’ve devoted much of my time to reviewing and testing secular homeschooling curriculum and other resource. I’ve spent the last three years talking to thousands of secular homeschooling families, and poring over tens of thousands of secular curriculum reviews and testing physical curriculum and digital apps for with hundreds of students to find the highest quality, most engaging, personalized learning materials for every type of learner.

I’ve spoken about homeschooling and modular learning at multiple venues including SXSW EDU, NY Tech Meetup, and on the LiberatedEd podcast.

In 2022, Modulo was one of 8 organizations who were awarded the Bridge Grant from the Vela Education Fund to expand access to homeschooling and modular learning to under-resourced communities.

My experience in education and homeschooling has led me to believe that there is no perfect education for every child, but families have an extraordinary amount of wisdom they can apply to building the perfect education for their individual child.

My goal with Modulo is to make it possible for any family to easily build a customized education that their child will love, and that will empower the whole family to thrive, taking into account, social, emotional and academic needs.

I love to answer questions from parents and receive feedback on how we can improve Modulo, so feel free to reach out anytime! I personally answer all the questions and comments readers leave on my blogs.

In my free time, I like hiking, traveling the world, tasting ceremonial grade matcha, enjoying dark chocolate.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Brandeis University with highest honors, with a double degree in French Literature and American Studies and minors in Environmental Studies and Peace & Conflict Studies.

And I love to learn!
