About Missouri

The Show-Me state encompasses 44.2 million acres, just over 69,062 square miles. Located in the midwestern region of the United States, part of its northwestern border is formed by the Missouri River, and its eastern border is formed by the Mississippi River. Neighboring states are Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

Missouri’s name derives from a Sioux word meaning “town of large canoes.” Missouri became the 24th state of the Union in 1821.

It’s nicknamed the “Show-Me State” in reference to a statement made by a Missouri Congressman at an 1899 banquet in Philadelphia in which he exclaimed, “I come from a state that raises corn and cotton and co*ckleburs and Democrats, and frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I am from Missouri. You have got to show me.” The phrase became popular, and Missouri citizens became known for their skepticism. The state flower is the Hawthorn Blossom, and the state bird is the Eastern Bluebird.

Missouri is made up of 114 counties. Jefferson City is the capital. Kansas City is the largest city, and St. Louis is the second largest city.
