Parental data is not required on the FAFSA

Medical students are not required to provide parental data on the FAFSA. However, they are encouraged to do so to be considered for Primary Care Loans and Loans to Disadvantaged Students. Only students who provide parental data will be considered for these need-based loans. Medical students will be considered for need-based scholarships without providing parental tax information.

Use IRS Data Retrieval

The 2023-24 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can be filed beginning October 1, 2022.

You are strongly encouraged to use the IRS Data Retrieval option to file your FAFSA. The IRS Data Retrieval tool will immediately upload tax data to the student section (and/or the parent section) of the FAFSA.

Verification

If the federal processor selects your FAFSA for the verification process and you completed a federal tax return and used the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you will not be asked to submit additional tax documents but will be asked to submit a Verification Worksheet.

If you completed a federal tax return but did not use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, you will be required to obtain an official IRS Tax Return Transcript to submit with the Verification Worksheet. Photocopies of federal tax documents can no longer be accepted due to new federal requirements.

  • IRS Tax Return Transcripts must be requested directly from the IRS at http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Get-Transcript.
  • Submit your verification documents as soon as possible, and make sure that you have signed where necessary.
  • The verification process must be complete before financial aid eligibility can be determined.

Your required Verification Forms are listed in Academica under "Student Resources."

FAFSA help

FAFSA on the Web Live Help is available via chat, email, or telephone at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

General information about the FAFSA and financial aid is available on the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators website under "Students, Parents, & Counselors."

Check your aid status

To view your aid status, as well as the forms required for completion of verification at WSU, log in to Academica, then:

  • Select the "Student Resources" under the WSU Resources tab
  • Select "Financial Aid"
  • From the list that appears, select "My Financial Aid Requirements" and/or "My Award Information"

Expected Family Contribution (EFC)

Using a need analysis formula set by Congress, the U.S. Department of Education uses the information you report on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to calculate the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). It is calculated from student income and asset information.

Cost of Attendance (COA)

The Cost of Attendance represents an estimate of the cost to attend medical school for an academic year. This includes tuition and fees, books and supplies, and an allowance for housing expenses, transportation, health care costs, and personal expenses. Only costs for the student are included. Expenses of family members are not included.

Your actual costs will vary depending on your choices of housing and other expenses, the Estimated Cost of Attendance provides estimated averages that can help you calculate financial aid eligibility.

All M.D.students -non-need-based aid

Non-need-based aid includes merit scholarships, Federal Grad PLUS Loans, Private Educational Loans, and other resources. To determine eligibility for non-need-based aid, the financial aid office subtracts the amount of all need-based aid, including the BOG MD Scholarship, from the Estimated Cost of Attendance (COA). The sum of all aid from all sources cannot exceed the estimated cost of attendance.

Other resources

Other resources may affect your eligibility for aid. When the financial aid office is notified that you have received other resources, need-based aid may be reduced or canceled according to federal regulations and policies. If the aid has already been paid to your account when the notification is received, the paid aid may be reduced or canceled before the other resources are applied. Other resources include the following:

  • Scholarships (other than BOG MD)
  • Reimbursem*nt or payment of educational costs by a third party (e.g., an employer or other agency)
