Mentioned in Exodus 32 and I Kings 12 in the Old Testament, worship of the golden calf is seen as a supreme act of apostasy, the rejection of a faith once confessed. The figure is probably a representation of the Egyptian bull god Apis in the earlier period and of the Canaanite fertility god Baal in the latter.

The story of the golden calf comes from the Bible. It is an example of the sin of idolatry. Idolatry is when something or someone is worshiped as if they were God. The golden calf was an idol made by the Israelites.

The overall theme of Exodus is redemption—how God delivered the Israelites and made them His special people. After He rescued them from slavery, God provided the Law, which gave instructions on how the people could be consecrated or made holy.

This is a departure of a large number of people. Exodus is the title of the second book of the Bible's Old Testament in which the Israelites escape slavery in Egypt, but the term can refer to any sudden departure of a group of people.

Verses 1-6 relate the people's restlessness at Moses' continued absence, and their appeal to Aaron to “make us gods.” Aaron instructed the women to bring him their earrings, and then fashioned their offerings into a calf. The word calf means “young bull in his first strength” in the Hebrew language.

Moses (Numbers 12:3, Exodus 3–14): Moses, the chosen leader to liberate the Israelites, was renowned for his exceptional humility (Numbers 12:3).

The Israelites make a golden calf at the foot of Mount Sinai and bow down and worship the idol. They break the most important covenant obligation commandment against worshipping other gods and idols (20:1-5; 20:23; 23:13).

This episode in Israel's history reveals that idolatry is a very serious sin against God. Idolatry is committed when a person attempts to either replace the true God with a false deity or gives priority to a person, thing or desire ahead of God.

The reason for making an idol was the people wanted to replace Moses as their leader with a false god of the Egyptians. The false god was Apis, who was a deity as the bull god. This is why Aaron made a golden calf (Exodus 32:2-4).

The intercessory prayer uttered by Moses, which appeals to God's sense of justice and salvific intentions, works. With regard to the divine character, it is revealing that God has not chosen some sycophantic yes-man to be God's right hand human. God has chosen one with the guts and the smarts to challenge God.

There's a whole sermon to be preached in the opening clause of this text: “When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down the mountain…” Of course, the key theme of the text is idolatry: the making and worshiping of the golden calf by the Israelites.
