We’re scheduled for our 12th annual trip to HI with family in two weeks. But we’re seeing Dare County is in the RED zone for covid infections; a rate that keeps rising. With three family members over 60 and five children under 12–an age group with some of the fastest growing infections— we are a bit concerned to say the least. I realize tossing this out to the masses isn’t the most analytical decision making method but our only other option is to cancel and there is no refund at this point. We’re staying near Durant Station. Thanks for any thoughts… |

And hoping this stays civil.... My .$.02, get vaxxed (data tells us you "should" be less "sick" if infected) , spend time and create incredible memories outside on the beach, G shop in off hours, wash your hands, distance as appropriate, dine out if you are comfortable and post awesome pics! |

My two cents: The Covid infection rates down here are definitely a concern but you can still have a safe vacation if you just take certain precautions. Wear masks when going inside anywhere and only get take out or eat at outside venues and you will greatly minimize the risks. The chance of transmission outside is very low so you should be able to enjoy the beaches and other outside activities pretty safely. I have been VERY cautious for the past year and a half but it seems like Covid will be with us for a while longer (maybe for a very long time in some form) and we can’t put our lives on hold forever. Take precautions but enjoy your vacation. |

Don't assume you will get here and go out shopping and to the stores and at bars in restaurants like those getting infected are doing. Relax - stay at home, go to beach, then home for dinner there. |

As others have said, wash your hands frequently, dine indoors or do take out, social distance as much as possible when in public, wear masks when in a store. I will also say maybe everyone in your group does a covid test before you go so you know that those staying in your house are not infectious. |

First get vaccinated. I'm a local resident and nobody locally is in a Panic. Business "almost" as usual. Come have fun. Make your own good time on the beach and outdoor activities. |

Come! I am a vaccinated 81 year old and have some immune issues but I have been to Nags Head quite a few times since all this begin. As others said, wear your mask, and take recommended precautions. I’m a big fan of curbside pickup at grocery stores, takeout or outside dinning at restaurants, etc. With a few changes and some common sense, you can still have a wonderful vacation and make lasting memories with your family. |

As mentioned, you can have a safe vacation trying to avoiding indoor crowded gatherings. Mask up at places like grocery stores, etc. But all in all enjoy what OBX has to offer...beaches, parks, scenery, etc. Try some new things, recipes, etc. Above all, don't take health advice from a public forum unless you're certain the information is truly from a doctor or Epidemiologist. |

Vaccinations, wear masks (yes, masks DO help slow the transmission of the coronavirus) and social distance when in public places, wash your hands, eat in, all will reduce any chance of infections. Enjoy the beach and your family. BTW.....if your decision is not to go, contact your rental folks immediately.....with the high demand you may be able to re-rent within days and get a refund. |

Thanks for the replies and helpful suggestions! (Even the attempts at being humorous ones. And we aren’t living in fear. But we do have a family member AKA Grandpa in our group—who contacted covid so severely, his wife had the “Does your husband have an end of life plan” conversation with his doctor last November. PS: masks DO work |

I would encourage you to take the trip. We are heading back from south Nags Head today. We enjoyed our week and felt very safe. Our group included 3 small children and 2 60-something grandparents plus folks in their 20s and 30s. Most everything we did when not at the house was outside. We went to beach daily, went on Jennette's Pier, ate outside at Fish Heads, and took kids to Whalebone Park and Dowdy Park to play. We ate inside three times and went at early times. Most restaurants and stores, staff were masked. |
